Young Jr.’s mother, Annivory Calvert, raised her son in California. His ambition to work as a politician is actually seen in his family tree. His father, Coleman Young, is a former Mayor of Detroit. #4. Who Is Coleman Young Jr.?

Born Joel Loving and later changing his name to Coleman Alexander Young II (Jr.), he presently serves as the state senator for the 1st district in Michigan. That district spans from Alter Road to Gibraltar.

This isn’t the first time that Young Jr. has served the public as a politician. Previously, he served two terms as a Democratic member of the Michigan House of Representatives. At that time, he served east, midtown, and downtown Detroit.

In total, Coleman has more than 10 years of experience as a Democratic Party politician. He won his Michigan House and Senate elections with very high vote margins.

#5. Detroit Mayoral Debate

Next on the agenda for Coleman is the Detroit mayor’s seat, which currently seems out of reach.

The Detroit mayoral election is set for November 7, 2017. Winning the mayor’s seat will require a lot more work  and fundraising from Coleman and his team.

The difficulty will be beating Mike Duggan, who is seeking a second term as  mayor. Duggan was the former president and CEO of Detroit Medical Center. He has applied his business background to promoting economic growth in Detroit. During Duggan’s time as mayor, the State of Michigan ended its emergency management of Detroit, after the city’s financial situation imprved.

Duggan made news for winning the Detroit mayoral race in 2013 because he was the first white person to win the seat since the early 1970s. This was newsworthy because Detroit has more African-American than white residents.

On October 25, 2017 Duggan and Young Jr. debated in what is going to be the only debate before the November 7 vote.

Duggan argued in the debate that, under his watch, the city has seen growth in jobs, new businesses being formed, and overall economic opportunities. Duggan also took verbal jabs at Young Jr. for his inexperience, when comparing their two resumes.

Young Jr. is looking to come in with new approaches to the job of Detroit mayor. This includes higher minimum wages and new initiatives to lower the crime rate. Earlier this year, the FBI named Detroit as the most dangerous city in the United States. Young Jr. feels that Duggan is only focusing on the economic picture and forgetting other important areas of the city.

Young Jr. trailed far behind Duggan in the Detroit mayoral primary in August, and is considered a longshot to win.
